PASSION PLAYS OBERAMMERGAU

Not many events can claim to have been around for almost 400 years and find themselves so ppopular that the demand for tickets far exceeds the availability.

The next production of “The Play of suffering, Dying and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus ” which has been performed 40 times will begin in 2010 from May 15 to October 3. Direct bookings for the series will begin on January 1st 2008.

The plays involve some 2000 actors and last for 5 hours and for the first time in 2010 will be broken into afternoon and evening acts. It will be staged a total of 102 times.

What is a Warbird – and where is Wanaka ?

The warbirds are the aircraft used in World Wars I and II, the fighters of Korea and the jets of Vietnam – plus aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Wanaka is in my opinion the most beautiful town in New Zealand nestled at the base of the Southern Alps on the edge of an azure blue lake.

In 1988 aviation entrepreneur Sir Tim Wallis presented an air show and country fair which attracted some 14,000 visitors to Wanaka Airport. He decided to expand on the theme and the event is held over the Easter weekend every other year – 2008 being the next one. Now some 100,000 people attend.

Yes – there is accommodation in the area but it is wise to book early if you wish to be close to the event.

There is so much more to be found in this area – bungey jumping, paragliding, fly by wire, zorbing, jetboating and other adventures.

A Travel Jewel

Duba Plains camp on the Okavanga Delta in Botswana is a real travel jewel. One goes here in search of animals.
After many, many years of travel to South Africa we had had a really good view of relatively few animals. Our ‘catch’ at Duba on the first day was 19 lions lounging in the sun on the airport runway.

The campsite is extremely comfortable, well managed and the service is impeccable.
