What is a Warbird - and where is Wanaka ?
The warbirds are the aircraft used in World Wars I and II, the fighters of Korea and the jets of Vietnam - plus aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
Wanaka is in my opinion the most beautiful town in New Zealand nestled at the base of the Southern Alps on the edge of an azure blue lake.
In 1988 aviation entrepreneur Sir Tim Wallis presented an air show and country fair which attracted some 14,000 visitors to Wanaka Airport. He decided to expand on the theme and the event is held over the Easter weekend every other year - 2008 being the next one. Now some 100,000 people attend.
Yes - there is accommodation in the area but it is wise to book early if you wish to be close to the event.
There is so much more to be found in this area - bungey jumping, paragliding, fly by wire, zorbing, jetboating and other adventures.
